New York City is home to 1.9 million residents under the age of 18, a number greater than the total population of all but three American cities. Nearly one-quarter of New York City’s residents are under the age of 18 and yet:

  • 1 in 4 children are born into poverty.
  • Access to quality arts programs and curriculums in New York City Public Schools fluctuate and are often the first to go during hard times.
  • There are less than 10 professional theatre companies for young audiences in New York City.

Free Summer Theatre is for kids and families!

Free Summer Theatre partners with 200 social service agencies and summer school programs to welcome 20,000 kids to the theatre every summer. Many of our partners rely on Free Summer Theatre to enhance their summer programs. Aside from our group partners, Free Summer Theatre is also open to the general public and creates a platform for much-needed family time. If a family of 4 plans to attend a major Broadway show, they could spend upwards of $500 for an evening of theatre. The cost for a family of 4 to attend Free Summer Theatre: $0.

With over 20 award-winning productions and World Premieres, Free Summer Theatre has created a legacy of fun, educational, and innovative new shows written specifically for young audiences.
